Things are looking up… our Spanish teachers, July and Yunior are awesome and so is our tour guide, Jasson. We walked to a little open-to-the-street café for lunch. We had seasoned rice, beef and cold macaroni salad. It was all really good. Now a storm is about to roll in.
Some little tidbits: Here they call dance clubs “discos,” it is a common friendly greeting to “pound it” just like we do in the states. Jasson even would “pound it” and “blow it up” which made me laugh. There is a new song out here called “Pa magar mi visa” which translates to “I want my visa” the other part of the chorus is “YoQueroUna Americana” which is “I want an Americana.” The song has a good beat and I could tell that our teachers got a kick out of sharing it with us – they also love to dance.
Some cultural things that strike me are men approaching you to tell you that you are beautiful – they are not shy about compliments at all. Also, like in other impoverished areas there are kids who beg for money. Sometimes they will follow the group of Americanas for blocks hoping for a handout. There are also lots of stay dogs in the city clearly scavenging for food around the trash.
Here to say something like “What’s up” they say ?Que lo Que? And you should answer “tranquil” to say “chillin”
